The world of athletics remains shocked by the tragic death of Kelvin Kiptum. The marathoner, owner of the men’s world record, died in a traffic accident along with his coach, the Rwandan Gervais Hakizimana. While waiting for what will be his funeral, scheduled for next Friday, February 23, in Kenya, his native country, and while the investigation of the case continues, details of what was the autopsy on the body of the coach of the record holder who He was running as a candidate in the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

According to the African media The Nation, Hakizimana died due to an intracranial hemorrhage. The analysis of the coach’s lifeless body took place last Wednesday and it was there that it was confirmed that he bled to death after suffering head injuries. It should be remembered that the accident occurred near Kaptagat, a town in southwestern Kenya known as the country’s training base for long-distance runners.

Pathologist Dr. Benson Macharia indicated that Kiptum’s coach suffered serious injuries in the accident that ended with his death and that of the distance runner. After delivering the report to the family members, the doctor indicated that the autopsy was performed in the presence of the case investigators and “other interested parties.”

Regarding the details of Hakizimana’s body, Macharia indicated that he had “laceration on his left ear, bruises on his forehead, another in the nasal region and several on his body.” In the analysis, it was found that the Rwandan native also suffered cranial fractures, both on the left and right sides, which extended from the roof of his head to the base of the skull.

“Any time we have a fracture that extends to the base of the skull, it is a very serious injury and that is why he suffered an intracranial hemorrhage that was extensive. I came to the conclusion that his death was due to such hemorrhage, common in this type of car accidents,” the doctor said in statements reported by The Nation.

For its part, the autopsy confirmed that the rest of the Kiptum coach’s organs were in good condition, including the heart and liver. In this sense, Hakizimana’s niece agreed with the report after witnessing the procedure. “When we arrived in Kenya we visited the accident site and they explained to us how it happened. But as a family we are not satisfied with the investigation,” said Uwase Sandrine, the coach’s niece.

“As a family we are going to take the body back to Rwanda, but we ask the Kenyan government to follow the matter and deepen the investigations and find out what really happened,” added Hakizimana’s relative.

The same media was the one that reported, through the presence of a witness to the event, how Kiptum’s body appeared at the scene of the accident. Kenneth Kimaiyo reported that the body of the record marathon runner was found lifeless under the vehicle. The Kenyan’s coach did have vital signs when he was found in an area near the destroyed car. “We tried to save the coach because he was still breathing, but he died immediately,” said the man who came to help the two people. A woman, the third crew member, saved his life.

“He was lying under the car with the seat belt broken and he was already dead,” was Kimaiyo’s sentence on the body of the world record holder. The president of the Kenya Athletics Federation, Jackson Tuwe, confirmed that the vehicle lost control and left the road. After that, it went through a ditch before hitting a large tree 60 meters from the main highway.
