“Apple Doubles iPhone 15 Battery Lifespan Ahead of EU Regulations”

Apple has made an important update to the battery lifespan of its latest iPhone 15 models, doubling the estimated capacity to retain 80% of its original charging capacity after 1,000 cycles. This change comes just in time for upcoming European Union (EU) regulations that will assign an energy grade to phones based on their battery longevity. Previously, Apple’s support documents stated that iPhone batteries could maintain 80% of their original full charge after 500 cycles. However, after retesting the long-term battery health of its 2023 smartphones, Apple discovered that they can actually retain this capacity after at least 1,000 cycles.

The company clarified that this improvement does not require any new hardware or software updates. Instead, it is a result of continual advancements in Apple’s battery components and iOS power management. By conducting tests involving charging and draining the batteries 1,000 times under specific conditions and common usage scenarios, Apple was able to determine the increased lifespan.

While the new estimate applies to the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, older iPhone models will maintain the previous estimate until further evaluation. Apple is currently assessing whether these older models’ estimates need to be updated as well.

The timing of this battery lifespan improvement aligns with EU regulations set to take effect in June 2025. Under these regulations, smartphone and tablet manufacturers operating in the EU will receive a grade (ranging from A to G) based on their energy efficiency, battery longevity, protection against dust and water, and resistance to accidental drops. To meet the battery longevity requirement for a favorable grade, devices must endure at least 800 charging cycles while retaining a minimum of 80% of their original capacity. Apple’s decision to retest its devices’ long-term health is likely a strategic move to ensure compliance with these regulations.

To maximize battery longevity, Apple advises users to keep their iPhones in temperatures between 62 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit whenever possible. It is also recommended to avoid charging or leaving the device in hot environments exceeding 95 degrees and to minimize direct sun exposure. For those storing an old iPhone for an extended period, it is best to leave it at a 50% charge.

In addition to the battery lifespan update, Apple will relocate one of the most crucial battery metrics in iOS settings. Starting with iOS 17.4, which is currently in beta testing, the battery cycle count will be moved from “Settings > General > About” to a more logical location under “Settings > Battery Health.” This change aims to provide users with easier access to information about their device’s battery health.

Apple initially introduced the battery cycle count feature in iOS 17, which was released last fall. By moving it to a more prominent position within the settings menu, Apple aims to enhance user awareness and understanding of their device’s battery performance.

With these updates, Apple continues to prioritize battery longevity and transparency, ensuring that its devices meet the evolving regulatory standards while providing users with the necessary information to optimize their iPhone experience.
