Ford Announces Sharp Change in Course to Compete with Chinese Automakers in Electric Car Market

The US car company Ford is apparently planning a very sharp change of course, which follows from the recent announcements of the company’s management.

In 2018, Ford made the decision to eliminate almost all models of light vehicles and reorganize to the production of pickup trucks and SUVs, but the latest trends in the world market have made the Americans reconsider. It turned out that the market for large pickups, albeit electric, is not so bright, and China is starting to show more and more pressure.

Ford CEO Jim Farley recently told Wolfe Research’s global auto conference in New York that smaller, cheaper electric cars are needed to compete with Chinese automakers, but the head of Ford’s electric vehicle manufacturing division was even more blunt, calling rivals from the East a “colossal strategic threat.”

Ford fears that after the rapid boom of electromobility in China, the country’s car manufacturing companies are likely to enter the US market as well. Unlike in Europe, Ford currently offers only three electric models in the US: the E-Transit, the F-150 Lightning and the Mustang Mach-E.

To change that, the company is working on a new, cost-effective electric car platform designed from the ground up. The possibility of joining forces with another manufacturer, such as General Motors, in this effort is also not ruled out.
