Brazil’s Alexandre Leads Team to Victory in World Table Tennis Women’s Team Tournament

At the World Table Tennis Championships being held in Busan, South Korea, on the 20th, Brazil, who is in the same group as Japan, defeated Iran 3-0 in the fourth match of the first women’s team league. Following Japan, who passed the lead with an unblemished 4-game winning streak, they advanced to the final tournament with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

By advancing to the final eight of the World Table Tennis Team Tournament, they will earn the right to participate in the Paris Olympics as a team and earn two Olympic singles spots. The tournament is contested in such a way that the team that wins 3 out of 5 singles matches wins, and in the first round, 40 men’s and women’s teams are divided into 8 groups and compete against each other. A total of 24 teams, the top three in each group, will advance to the final tournament. In addition, the eight first-place teams in each group will be seeded in the first round of the final tournament and advance to the second round (top 16).

Brazil, aiming to participate in the team competition for the third time in a row, defeated South Africa 3-0 in their first league match and got off to a winning start. In the second match, they won their second straight victory against Luxembourg 3-2. The third game was an “all-win showdown” against Japan, but they lost 0-3, missing out on finishing first in their group.

Then, in the fourth game, they faced Iran. Bruna, the third-generation Japanese-American Takahashi sisters who are the ace of the Brazilian national team, won the first match 3-1, and her younger sister Julia also won the second match 3-1. In the third game, Alexandre, who was a hot topic during the match against Japan as a one-armed player, won a close match 3-2, and the team won in straight sets. They advanced to the final tournament in second place behind Japan with three wins and one loss.

Alexandre, who won her second consecutive silver medal in the women’s singles (standing 10) at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, lost to Hirano in the match against Japan, but had a good record of 3 wins and 1 loss in the first round of the women’s team competition at this tournament. In the second game against Luxembourg, the Takahashi sisters lost consecutive games and appeared in a situation where there was nothing left to do, and they won the third game 3-1, contributing greatly to the team’s come-from-behind victory.
