An American man has confessed to the murder and rape of a young woman near the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Troy Phillip Bohling, a 31-year-old from Michigan, admitted to the charges at the start of his trial, according to the German news agency dpa. The incident occurred last year when Bohling was on vacation in Germany and met two female tourists, Eva Liu and Kelsey Chang.
The attack took place on June 14 near the Marienbruecke, a bridge over a gorge close to Neuschwanstein Castle, which is known as one of Germany’s most popular tourist attractions. Prosecutors allege that Bohling encountered Liu and Chang by chance on a hiking path and lured them off the trail. He promised to take them to a romantic spot for selfies with a better view of the castle but instead pushed Liu to the ground, choked her until she lost consciousness, and raped her.
Chang tried to intervene, but Bohling pushed her down a 165-foot ravine, causing her to sustain a head injury. Fortunately, she survived the altercation. Liu, however, was airlifted to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that Bohling’s laptop and cellphone contained child pornography. As a result, he is also facing charges of possession of child pornography in addition to murder, rape with fatal consequences, and attempted murder. In Germany, murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The defense lawyer, Philip Mueller, acknowledged the severity of the crime committed by his client. “The defendant has committed an unfathomable crime,” Mueller stated. The trial is ongoing, and a verdict is expected to be announced in mid-March.
