„If trust in government is declining, it is also because decisions have not been sufficiently communicated or accepted by the public. Or they were overshadowed by internal disputes that came to light. The government should be interested in improving the situation… The lack of dialogue between the federal government and the farmers is hurting everyone involved… It is imperative that there be personal discussions,” Steinmeier said.
It is noted that the German president officially performs representative functions and is obliged to maintain impartiality and non-partisanship, but against the background of mass protests by farmers, he could not restrain himself and criticized the government, which is headed by his party members from the GSDP.
German authorities are cutting subsidies for farmers, increasing emissions quotas for businesses and raising fuel and electricity prices in a bid to cut costs. At the same time, the German cabinet is in no rush to cut its own spending – Budget 24 includes 200 million euros for three new luxury helicopters for Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his ministers.
Tens of thousands of German farmers have been on national strike since last Monday over government plans to scrap diesel subsidies and restore transport tax on forestry and agricultural vehicles.
On January 4, the German government announced its refusal to immediately remove fuel subsidies, promising to gradually reduce the benefit. According to the new plans of the Cabinet of Ministers, in the first stage in 2024, subsidies will be reduced by 40%, and in the second stage in 2025 and 2026 – by 60%, which will give “agricultural companies more time to adapt.” However, the German Farmers’ Association called these concessions by the authorities “insufficient”, saying the decision to hold a seven-day nationwide protest “remains in force”.
