Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player, assured that Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen looks more like a Pep Guardiola team than one of Jürgen Klopp, when analyzing the Spaniard as a possible new Liverpool coach.
Xabi Alonso, who has Leverkusen leading the Bundesliga, beat Bayern Munich 3-0 this weekend and aspires to be the first German champion other than the Bavarians since 2013.
Analyzing Saturday’s victory, Carragher highlighted the number of short passes that Bayer Leverkusen makes, close to 95% of the total, which places them as the team in Europe that makes the most passes of this style, ahead of Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain, second and third in this classification.
«It is not like Klopp’s Liverpool. “It is more reminiscent of what we see from Pep Guardiola’s team,” said Carragher.
“We can say that Alonso’s influence is more like Guardiola’s, which makes sense, because he was his coach.”
The former Liverpool player, now one of the most important commentators on British television, said that Alonso is the favorite to succeed Klopp and that “there is a good chance” that he will be.
«When you think about the great coaches and where they started, many of them achieved important things at lower levels. Like what José Mourinho did with Porto and Jürgen Klopp with the two Bundesligas with Borussia Dortmund.
«If Xabi Alonso becomes the new Liverpool manager, which I believe will happen, I think they have been lucky that Klopp has decided to leave now. “The timing for Alonso to come is perfect,” Carragher said. EFE
