With regional writers as protagonists, the Chacu Guaraní Fair welcomes Alejandro Bovino Maciel from Corrientes in 2024, who has a prolific literary production in various genres. On Saturday, March 2, at 6:00 p.m., Bovino Maciel will premiere the novel “The Forgiveness of Sins,” whose presentation will be given by the Chaco poet Esteban González; and the book of stories “Responsos del corazón”, focused on the War of the Triple Alliance, with a presentation by the poet and writer María Laura Riba.

forgiveness of sins

Short novel about four stories that a grandmother tells three eleven-year-old children in the city of Bella Vista, Corrientes, where the author spent some years of his childhood. The critic and poet Alberto Boco wrote about the book:

“This is literature that does not attempt to transport us to the past via meticulous evocation in the Proustian style, nor is it the testimony of stories that are intended to be real, quite the opposite, the technique of the story within a story warns us from the prologue that the truth is not It is the purpose, in fact, it tells us that it is about lying but without the intention of fraud or deception, but rather to elevate itself to a rank of literary truth, if I may use the oxymoron, that is: literature in its purest form. .

For his part, the writer Luis Benítez wrote: Bovino Maciel is written (his are these “provincial memories”) and he is also inscribed. He is not troubled nor does he feel itchy when he begins his clever fallacies, further expanding his initial trick, putting it before the atrocities that Nona Nicasia – a Corrientes Scheherazade – will go on to tell to the little cousins Marita and Estela of the infante Bovino Maciel. The very successful effect of contrast between the candid remarks of the children to each horrifying story that the old woman tells them, is powerful enough to make the reader forget that Bovino Maciel does not appeal to mimesis to make Nicasia speak as what she “It is a kind of peasant, but she lets it spread freely, reeling off its bloody savagery.”

Answers from the past

This work contains three stories about the War of the Triple Alliance (1865-1870) between Paraguay and its allies Uruguay, the empire of Brazil and Argentina. It has a prologue by Professor Milagros Ezquerro San José, from the Sorbonne University of Paris. It contains the Argentine part of the book “Los conjurados del Quilombo del Gran Chaco” (Alfaguara, Buenos Aires, 2000) in which Augusto Roa Bastos for Paraguay, Omar Prego for Uruguay, Eric Nepomuceno for Brazil and Alejandro Bovino Maciel for Argentina participated. This book has sparked numerous academic studies as it is the first text written by four Mercosur authors with a common theme: the Great War that divided these nations in the past.

In addition to this story, “Responsos delpasdo” contains two stories: “Old Mr. Sarmiento”: few remember that, although Miter started the War, Sarmiento ended it during his presidency. Precisely a figure as controversial as Don Domingo Faustino, who wrote that “Paraguayans must be killed before they are born, in their mothers’ wombs” and then went to spend his last years and die in Asunción, Paraguay. This last stage is what the story reflects. And finally, “Aunt Emilia is afraid of dying”, a last story by the author about the atrocities committed by the occupation troops (Brazil and Argentina) at the end of the War.

For the presentation of “Responses of the past”, the author will dialogue with the writer María Laura Riba. The Consul of Paraguay in the Chaco will also open the session, providing the opportunity to reinforce regional integration.
