“We considered Klinsmann unlikely to improve as a coach, in terms of his skills and work ethic.â€

Klinsmann, coach of the United States national team between 2011 and 2016, thanked his players in a post on social media.

“To all the players, my coaching staff and all the fans of South Korea, with sincere gratitude,†he wrote. “Thank you very much for all your support and for taking us to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup and for an incredible journey in the last 12 months without losing in 13 consecutive matches before the semi-final.â€

“I have caused great disappointment to the fans who always supported the national team. I’m really sorry,†Lee wrote on Instagram. “I had to be an example and listen to my older colleagues. I would like to apologize to many people who must be disappointed in me.â€
