LIMA – The existence of the Ad people of the Prophet Hud who was described as being tall, aka a giant, is still a mystery.
The discovery of rock art depicting Ice Age giants in a cave in the Colombian Amazon provides new evidence of human presence in the region much earlier than previously thought.
Archaeologists estimate the rock art to be 12,600 years old, indicating that humans have inhabited the Amazon rainforest much longer than previous estimates, which generally ranged from 11,000 to 8,000 years ago.
“’Our recent excavations help fill this gap, not only dating their arrival much earlier than previously thought, but also providing new insights into their lives and historical trajectories.” said study author Mark Robinson in a statement as reported by IFL Science, Tuesday (20/2/2024).
First discovered by Robinson and his team during field research conducted in 2017 and 2018, the two rock shelters were part of a series of settlements in the Serranía La Lindosa region, on the edge of the Amazon.
It was here that researchers discovered one of the world’s largest collections of prehistoric rock art, spanning a 13-kilometre (8-mile) stretch of rock face.
Painted in red ocher, this ancient work of art depicts some of the now-extinct megafauna that inhabited the region during the Ice Age, including mastodons and giant sloths. However, until now, little was known about what happened to the site during its thousands of years of use.
After studying the distribution of stone tools, charcoal and food remains in various layers of soil, the researchers were able to identify four waves of activity. The first occurred in the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, from about 12,600 to 10,000 years ago.
The discovery of giant Ice Age rock art in the Brazilian Amazon is important evidence that expands knowledge of human history in the region.
This discovery shows that humans have inhabited the Amazon rainforest for much longer than previously thought, and paves the way for further research on migration, human-animal interactions and culture in the past.
