The reaction of the Israeli leadership was caused by the statements of the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to which Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, similar to what Hitler committed with the Holocaust.
The Israeli government issued a note of protest to Brazil’s ambassador to the country after the Foreign Ministry summoned him, and subsequently issued a statement that Lula is now “persona non grata” in Israel.
In the relevant announcement that turns the president of Brazil into an undesirable person for Israel, he cites his statements over the weekend from Addis Ababa where he attended the African Union Summit, in which Lula said that: “What is happening in the Gaza Strip and to the Palestinian people has never happened before at any time in history. Although, it happened again, when Hilter was killing the Jews. What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not war, but genocide. It is not a war between soldiers. It is a war between a ready army on the one hand, and children and women on the other.”
The Israeli side maintains that these statements were a serious anti-Semitic attack, while the Prime Minister of the Israeli government, Benjamin Netanyahu, commented on the matter, arguing that Lula’s statements are: “Relativization of the Holocaust and an attempt to harm the Jewish people and their right to defend themselves. The comparison between Israel and the Holocaust by the Nazis and Hitler crosses a red line.”
It is noted that until today in Gaza approximately 29,000 have lost their lives as a result of Israel’s operations. In this context, the head of the foreign affairs committee of the House of Commons in Britain, Conservative MP Alicia Cairns, argued in her statements that Israel has now far exceeded the exercise of its right to self-defense.
