One of the most innovative performances of the season, The Diary of a Madman, after the triumphant reception by the audience and critics in Athens at the Alkmini theater, begins its tour for other states as well
‘Madness’ as a rupture in a toxic and deeply sick society full of racism.
Based on the legendary theatrical monologue of the same name by Nikolai Gogol and set in the Athens of 2023, the play is transported from Tsarist Russia in the 19u century, in the harsh reality of our modern homophobic and sexist society, in a show that wants to talk about the people that this society has placed on the margins.
The low-wage employee of Gogol’s original work has here been transformed into a poor woman in her 50s, assigned the male gender at birth.
Feeling like a parasite of her own life, stuck at the bottom and forced to watch helplessly as the monster called society whips her, either through the abusive behavior of her parents, or through the ridicule of her superiors in the Ministry where she works, or through the fierce bullying of the ordinary and everyday people who surround her, the heroine sits and writes.
She bravely opens the pages of her diary, tells her story, falls in love, raves, dances, sings, dreams, hopes, despairs, outlining a world full of inequality and racism.
“Diary of a Madman” turns into “Diary of a Queer” and rewrites the shocking pages of Nikolai Gogol’s legendary monologue in a queeredition that will be discussed.
Because the world is much more beautiful when we accept ourselves and those around us for what they really are.
