A 16-year-old student at Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy Mesquite in Texas was shot by police after bringing a gun to school on Monday morning. The incident occurred near Oates Drive and Gus Thomasson Road, prompting a swift response from the Mesquite Police Department. The student, whose identity remains undisclosed, was inside an office with the firearm when officers arrived.
According to Mesquite Police Sgt. Curtis Phillip, the officers attempted to negotiate with the student, but an officer-involved shooting took place during the process. Thankfully, the student survived and was taken into custody. No other individuals were injured in the incident.
Eyewitness Chris Miller, who happened to be near the school at the time, described seeing the suspect being attended to by Mesquite Fire-Rescue before being transported in an ambulance. Miller expressed his shock, especially since his own children attend a school nearby. The students and teachers from Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy Mesquite were eventually evacuated from the building, recounting their terrifying experience during the lockdown.
One student shared their experience of hiding in a corner to ensure silence, while another recalled being required to walk in a single-file line and undergo a search before being directed to the nearby Living Truth Baptist Church for reunification with their parents. Emotions ran high as parents eagerly hugged and comforted their children, relieved that everyone was safe.
Both students and teachers were deeply affected by the incident. Teachers described their students’ reactions when they heard the noises and witnessed the police entering the campus, with many breaking down in tears. The standard procedure of searching the campus after the shooting understandably heightened anxiety levels among both staff and students.
Travis Block, Mesquite Fire’s Public Information Officer, expressed gratitude that a tragedy was avoided and acknowledged the effectiveness of the school’s safety protocols. The student who was shot was taken to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. The school administration released a statement on social media, assuring parents and the community that their safety protocols worked as intended.
The three officers involved in the shooting included an eight-year veteran, a five-year veteran, and an officer-in-training with prior experience in another agency. The motive of the student remains unknown, and the school plans to conduct a thorough review of the incident to determine if additional security measures are necessary.
The Mesquite Police Criminal Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Unit, and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office are all conducting separate investigations into the incident.
