This Monday the ATP ranking was updated, a historic gentlemen’s classification since there is no player with a one-handed backhand for the first time since the system was created on August 23, 1973.
Now, the top ten players in the world own two-handed backhands: Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Hubert Hurkacz, Álex De Minaur and Taylor Fritz.
The update of the ranking this February 19 recorded the departure of the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas from the Top 10, the last player with a one-handed backhand who is located in box number 11 in this new week.
The Top 10 of gentlemen does not have a one-handed backhand
There are fewer and fewer players who practice tennis with one-handed backhand, the modernity of the game, with more and more power and physicality, has led tennis players to opt for two-handed execution, less attractive, with less reach, but with more capacity to respond to the force of the opponent’s blows, allowing racket professionals to add more force to said blow.
The Greek is followed at number thirteen on the planet by the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, owner of one of the best backhand strokes on the men’s circuit, then there is the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in box 26.
Next is Christopher Eubakns in position 34, while on step 44 is Daniel Evans. If we remember several of the best techniques in the history of tennis, we must highlight the techniques of Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, Richard Gasquet or Gustavo Kuerten.
