In the USA, they reveal the main intrigue of the year – 2024-02-20 02:09:40

/ world today news/ Traditionally, the first local primary vote of the overseas presidential election campaign was held in the state of Iowa. The Republicans have determined the absolute leader – Donald Trump. Democrats preferred to delay the trial until March. About the results, the mechanism and the meaning of the primary elections in Iowa – in the material.

Amazing feeling”

Numerous polls show: in Iowa, at least 50% of Republicans support Trump. The predictions were confirmed. Having collected more than half of the votes, he outspent his nearest competitors by more than two times.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has 21%, former US Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley has 19. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, who has been called “the new Trump” by the way, spoke very unconvincingly and left the race, calling for a vote for the former President.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump commented on his victory: “It’s an incredible feeling. We have to take our country back. We’ve been through a lot of bad things in the last three years and it has to stop.”

This time, the Democrats replaced the usual one-day procedure with voting by mail, which will continue until the so-called “Super Tuesday” – when primaries will be held simultaneously in the largest number of states. That is, until March 5. If Trump wins on Super Tuesday, he will become the nominee, the only Republican candidate for president.

Why is it important?

Fifty-five years ago, party primary rules were simplified to a local party committee format, and Iowa voters were the first to try them out. It brought national attention to the state. It’s been the same ever since: Campaigns always start in Iowa.

Iowa’s long-standing local party committee format couldn’t have come at a better time. This is not just a secret ballot, but above all an open discussion. It’s also cheaper. Party activists gather in libraries, schools and private homes without burdening the local administration.

Anyone you consider worthy can speak, even if they are not on the official candidate lists. They vote immediately. Very few people are allowed to vote remotely – for example, military personnel stationed overseas and people with disabilities.

Yes, fewer voters participate in this procedure than in the primary election. But that is why the most active electorate participates, always ready to defend its political position.

Reserve for the future

Based on the results of the caucuses, votes are allocated to state delegates who will go to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this summer. The all-party candidate will be confirmed there.

In Iowa, Republicans have only 40 delegates. From Texas, for example, where the population is much larger, they are 200. Accordingly, the stakes in the primaries are higher there. In theory, delegates could vote differently than they were instructed. But this is highly unlikely as it will end their political careers.

The Iowa caucus is an important factor in the unfolding presidential race. The faction favorite becomes favored by sponsors (even though Trump doesn’t really need them) and gets more media attention. With Ramaswamy, considered a dark horse prospect, withdrawn from the campaign, Republican publicists will have an easier time promoting the main three: Trump, DeSantis and Haley. Well, the votes of the retired party member will not hurt the former president.

Democrats, by refusing normal in-person meetings, lost points. “Elephants” noisily discuss Trump’s triumph in Iowa and the emerging prospects. The “donkeys” are silent for now.

They extended the vote until March 5, of course, for a reason. In these days, Trump will stand trial in the case of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Democrats hope to take advantage of this.

In addition, in February, the US Supreme Court will hear the former president’s appeal of the Colorado court’s decision that removed him from the primaries. But even among the “donkeys,” many note that going after Trump only increases his popularity. The results of the local party committee confirmed this.
