NASA Seeks Candidates for Year-Long Simulated Mars Experience

The Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) program aims to replicate the conditions that astronauts would face on Mars. The selected candidates will be confined to a 158 square-meter habitat called Mars Dune Alpha, where they will have limited resources and must overcome challenges such as environmental stressors and equipment failures.
NASA explains on the mission’s website that the crew will conduct simulated spacewalks and gather data on various factors, including physical and behavioral health and performance. By creating this analog environment, NASA can introduce realism effects that may not be possible on the International Space Station. “This really is the core of getting us all of the data that we’re going to need to go on these missions,” says CHAPEA principal investigator Grace Douglas.
However, being selected for this mission is no easy feat. NASA has set strict criteria for applicants. Eligible candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 30-55, in excellent health, and non-smokers with no criminal record. Additionally, potential crew members must have at least a master’s level of STEM qualifications, a minimum of one thousand hours as an aircraft pilot, or completed military officer training.
The application process is rigorous, with questions ranging from topics of diets and gut health to experience with isolation and claustrophobia. One question even asks how applicants handled the COVID isolation, emphasizing the importance of mental resilience in such an extreme environment.

The first of the three planned CHAPEA missions began on June 25, 2023, and has already reached its halfway mark. The four crew members have successfully completed numerous challenges, including growing crops, while isolated in a 3D-printed building within NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
“The best and the worst part of the mission so far has been how fast it’s flown by,” says medical officer Nate Jones. “I know that it’s been a truly special year here so far, and so I’m really going to miss it, but I also can’t wait to see my family and friends again.”
