The Future of PlayStation 6: Tradition or Adaptation? Decision Makers at Sony Face a Crossroads

We all know that it is being created, that the time will come for the first rumors, the first leaks, and finally the first official presentation. PlayStation 5 has already entered the second phase of its independent, market life, and although it seems that this equipment will remain almost unrivaled, its successor will not have to fight at all. There are extensive changes in gaming due to the recent decisions of the modern management of the Xbox division. For decision-makers at Sony, there are two choices: tradition or adaptation. What will the PlayStation 6 manufacturer choose for the stable future of the console?

First, let’s address the competition’s latest move. Very often we see a tendency in the media to promote “the end of the console arms race era” – what does this mean in practice? Phil Spencer, or King Spencer if you prefer, often refers to the concept of exclusivity of games on a given platform. It’s easy to guess that the Xbox leader literally points to Japanese Sony. The PlayStation manufacturer combines tradition with adaptation to the methods of the Redmond giant (it’s an old and well-known term, right?). We will provide many examples for you in a moment.

Paid online, the first such decisive and risky move by Redmond when the Xbox Live Gold service was launched. When Sony’s representatives at that time assured that the company would not go in this direction, it was enough to wait until 2010. Sony then initiates PlayStation Plus, which we write about so often today. PlayStation effectively flies under the radar because Sony’s constant adaptation to competing solutions is rarely talked about. Solutions that have revolutionized the business model in the gaming industry in the last decade. The initiator was Xbox. Now we will take a look at the preliminary, although still unconfirmed, plans of the Japanese manufacturer. PlayStation 6 has long been out of the planning phase.

Artificial soul

We recently reported on Xbox’s management plans regarding the production of new hardware. The information reads about “new, ultra-powerful equipment” – we know that the brand’s authors can afford another beast. Nintendo has either already finished or is finalizing the creation of Nintendo Switch 2. Sony? PlayStation 6 is more reliable than further price increases in stores. Let’s look at a handful of available leaks. Sometimes imaginary, sometimes real, but always high. In the context of the current generation, the first mention of PS5 dates back to 2019, when a photo of the development model (dew-kit) hit the media. Today, this stream of information flows even faster. As the YouTuber claims, Moore’s Law is Dead, one of the key features of PlayStation 6 will be the use of AI elements. What is it about in practice? Creator this material has received information that Sony will use artificial intelligence, e.g. to increase immersion between players and NPCs. On paper it sounds quite tempting, but as we know, the issue of AI is currently highly controversial, and it is almost a sign of our times. We recommend one of our latest materials on this matter.

Creators often use AI, and this practice will only intensify. Imagine, for example, an extensive RPG game with a million dialogue options in which algorithms constantly generate new conversation windows.. The same applies to NPC behavior. It is both terrifying and fascinating. We don’t know how much truth there is in this. This one, as always, probably lies somewhere in between. Interestingly, the YouTuber emphasized that this will be one of the main features of the new console. In the context of the increasing requirement for constant access to the network in games, the use of AI by a console manufacturer does not sound like a pipe dream. AI for NPCs would be a nightmare for voice actors. Roger Clark, an actor known for his great performance in Red Dead Redemption 2, openly condemned such initiatives. By the way, we’ve had an interesting moment. In the past, leakers obtained information about new solutions in the field of hardware itself. In the case of PS5, there was immediate talk about a new version of the controller. This time, there is more talk about digitization and AI itself. Is the end of the tradition approaching? Xbox is changing its tactics a bit, and Sony seems completely unfazed for now. Well, maybe not entirely.

A matter of exclusivity

Something ends, something begins. This famous quote can also be applied to the current situation in the industry. First, a comment from Phil Spencer. “We have made the decision to release four of our games on other platforms” – this is not a revolutionary decision, but a very crucial one. Spencer cites the sequel to Ori as an example, which made the company understand that brands associated primarily with the X logo are doing well in other communities, in this particular case, Nintendo Switch. Sony will probably never release its games on Microsoft consoles, but today we can play Spider-Man or God of War on PC. Five years ago this would have been unthinkable. Xbox has become an ecosystem. In 2017, Phil Spencer described this plan as long-term, lasting about a decade. This time in 2027, we will be expecting the debut of PlayStation 6. Why might it be the only console on the market? Precisely because of Sony’s traditional approach to exclusivity. Usually, it takes several years before a given production from the PlayStation catalog is released on PC. We doubt a Sony game will ever come to Xbox, even the powerful iteration of hardware that Xbox execs mentioned in a podcast a few days ago.

Xbox is transforming into a service, Nintendo is following its own path, and Sony seems to remain faithful to tradition and closely monitors the movements of its competitors. The company will adapt to new market conditions anyway, this is inevitable. Naomi Matsuka, vice president of Sony, claims that “PS5 sales will begin to decline in the next fiscal year.” After these words, many analysts say that we will know the release date of PlayStation 6 much sooner. At this point there are more questions than answers. Recently, there has also been a lot of talk about Sony’s interest in the service model in games. Let’s look at the recently released Suicide Squad: Death to the Justice League from Rocksteady. A studio appreciated for its excellent single-player narrative is moving into GaaS. The media boycotted the game, but the community does its part and actively supports the production. PlayStation 6 may remain faithful to tradition and maybe even receive a drive, but current times leave no doubts about digitalization and the service model of games. However, I would prefer tradition, because Sony has accustomed us to high-quality games and stories. I want to play PlayStation 6 according to the old, classic rules. Too many of these ecosystems lately. We may learn the answers in the next two years, when Sony officially presents the system. The strength of the console will not necessarily lie in power, but in tradition. That’s why you read the title of the post, regular reader.
