Herenthout –

She is reportedly never nervous to sing, but during The Voice of Flanders, stress struck Celeste Verbeeck (20) from Herenthout. No one pushed until Laura Tesoro ultimately saved the day. “We have known each other for years,” says Celeste.

On Sunday she performed Before he cheats by Carrie Underwood. “Because the country sound is my thing. And that song suits my voice well,” says Celeste. But none of the coaches pressed, an exit was lurking. “There were moments with good vibes, but sometimes it was also whoops,” said Natalia. Laura Tesoro was milder. “The stress took over, but I hear she has a good voice.” Celeste understands the criticism. “Those nerves were justified. You can’t imagine what a stage like that and those cameras do to you. I didn’t even realize that sometimes it wasn’t quite right. At that moment I was mainly concerned with getting to the end of the song.”

The chairs remained motionless, you could see the disappointment. Until suddenly the fifth coach Laura appeared to take Celeste to The Comeback Stage on VTM Go, in which early dropouts are revived. “I was so happy, because I have known Laura for years and look up to her. It made our bond even closer.” They met through Tesoro’s club tour. “My godmother took me to one of her performances. I was immediately sold. I love her songs and Laura as a person. By meeting Laura’s fans, I eventually attended her shows regularly and got to know her backstage. When no one printed, it no longer occurred to me that Laura would show up again. It was mainly on my mind that it was over.”

Children’s version

It was the second time that Verbeeck participated in The Voice. “That’s right, the first time was in 2015. I auditioned for The Voice Kids at VTM, but the ship foundered in the second heat. But I always stayed busy with music. I was even in a band for several years as a young teenager. Originated at Muses in motion, a dance school in Herenthout where friends danced. We could sing well, so the owner suggested a band. Together with two other singers I would sing at dance shows.”

Celeste has artistic genes from no strangers. “My grandfather is a composer and producer, and has his own recording studio. I regularly passed by there to sing songs. He also sang a long time ago. My father makes miniature figures from clay, and my sister is studying graphic design at art school.”

Old covers

For some time now, Celeste has been part of the group Retro, a cover band that often plays in the Herenthout area. “We perform music from the sixties to the eighties. Initially, such music wasn’t my thing, but after a while I started to really appreciate those songs. Since the songs are from way before my time, I didn’t know them. I had to rehearse every song.” Over the past year, Retro could be found here and there in the Kempen. “In Herenthout, but also in EuroParcs (Mol) and at the Beekparkfeesten (Nijlen) and countless cafes and fairs. There is nothing I love more than singing, and of course I hope to make it my livelihood one day. But I am sober enough to know that something like that is almost impossible.”

Verbeeck works full-time at the Spar supermarket in Wiekevorst. “I had already taken courses at college, only to realize that my heart lay elsewhere. You can’t keep me away from the music. One day I hope to follow a musical education, but that is a thing of the future for the time being.”
