We celebrate
On February 19, we also commemorate the hanging of Vasil Levski. According to the old Julian calendar, Levski was hanged on February 6, 1873. Interestingly, his birthday is also dated July 6, 1837. We celebrate it on July 18 without two opinions on the matter.
Where did they go wrong? When switching to the Gregorian calendar, a certain number of days are added to the corresponding date. This number, however, increases by 1 day for each passing century. Thus, for the 18th century (from 1700 to 1800), 11 days are added, and for the 19th century (from 1800 to 1900), when Levski lived, 12 days are added. By this very rule, February 6 becomes February 18 in a new style.
After 1900, however, 13 days were added to the old date. I.e. February 6 would have been February 19 if Levski had lived in the 20th century. When the people who made the mistake lived.
In any case, the tradition of honoring the Apostle’s memory on February 19 remains. A permanently ingrained habit among people who flock to the monument in droves on this day and even a reorganization of traffic is required.
A mistake might just be a good reason to remember it and talk about it longer. There is no Bulgarian who does not agree that he deserves it.
And going back to the calendar, perhaps we should note another symbolic coincidence – March 3 in the old style was on February 19.
It is true that the new and the old style confuse people quite a bit. But it is good to turn this into an occasion to remember our heroes more often and bow twice if necessary to the memorable events in history that made us who we are.
