Kansas City Mayor Accuses Missouri Governor of Racial Remarks Following Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Shooting
In a recent interview on the local radio show “Up to Date,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas accused Missouri Governor Mike Parson of using a racial “dog whistle” when referring to the suspected shooters at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade as “thugs.” The mayor expressed his disagreement with Parson’s choice of words and highlighted what he perceived as a pattern of alleged racism.
During the interview with KCUR host Steve Kraske, Mayor Lucas stated, “I have respect for the governor. We get along well. I disagree strongly with how he would describe that situation. I certainly do think this was criminal activity. It was lawlessness, and I think that that’s troubling. But ‘thugs’ is a dog whistle in the most classic sense.” The mayor emphasized that he has witnessed similar incidents of alleged racism in the past.
The shooting incident occurred during the victory parade for the Kansas City Chiefs, which took place on February 14, 2024. Two minors were charged with gun-related offenses in connection with the shooting, resulting in one fatality and 22 injuries. The suspects are currently held in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center, facing charges of resisting arrest and gun-related offenses.
The Kansas City Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident, and it is expected that additional charges will be filed in the future. The court’s statement also mentioned that 11 children were wounded during the shooting but were expected to recover.
Mayor Lucas further addressed the issue of racial bias in media coverage, stating, “There’s this kind of giant conservative theory on social media now that the reason these mug shots haven’t been shown is because the purported defendants are Black, and if it were a White defendant we would have just shown them. That is absolutely preposterous. There are protections to juveniles.”
The mayor’s comments reflect a broader concern about the use of language that may perpetuate racial stereotypes or contribute to racial tensions. The term “thugs” has been criticized for its potential to be a coded racial slur, and Mayor Lucas believes it falls into this category.
