Earlier this week, former US President Donald Trump was sentenced in New York to pay a sum equivalent to around NOK 3.7 billion after a fraud conviction. He also loses the right to hold management positions in companies in New York for the next three years.
The background is a lawsuit by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, in which Trump, his two eldest sons and the family business Trump Organization were accused of having tricked themselves into better terms with banks and insurance companies by inflating the values of the company.
Now a supporter of Trump, Elena Cardone, has started a fundraising campaign for Trump, through the platform GoFundMe, which can be compared to the Norwegian Spleis. The goal of the fundraiser is to collect the entire sum.
– I stand firmly by President Donald Trump in the face of what I see as a completely new and unfair treatment of certain legal actors in New York, Cardone writes on the website.
And continues:
– The legal battles he has faced lately are not only an attack on him, but an attack on the very ideals of justice and fair trial, which all Americans deserve.

Trump has announced an appeal
Donald Trump has not hidden what he thinks about the verdict.
On his own social medium, Truth Social, he lashed out at both Judge Arthur Engoron and the prosecutor in the case on Friday.
– This “decision” is a complete and total farce. We cannot let this injustice stand, Trump wrote.

Faced with the press present outside his residence in Florida, Trump was clear about what he now wanted to do in the case.
– We will appeal, said the man who is now fighting to become the Republicans’ presidential candidate in the election that will take place in early November this year.
Got millions in
So far, just under 250,000 dollars, or more than NOK 2.5 million, have come in for Cardone’s fundraising campaign.
In addition to the latest sentence, Trump was also sentenced in January to pay 83.3 million dollars, or approximately NOK 865 million, to the writer E. Jean Carroll in a libel case.
In May 2023, Donald Trump was found guilty of assaulting writer E. Jean Carroll and ordered to pay her five million US dollars in damages.

Trump stated after the lawsuit that he had never met her and denied the abuse. This was a message he repeated several times. Then Carroll sued him again for defamation.
“Absolutely ridiculous. I completely disagree with both sentences,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after this sentence.
He also wrote that he was going to appeal the sentence, that he believed the legal system was out of control and that it was being used as a political weapon.
