The volleyball players from the men’s team of Deya Sport were chosen as Team #1 of the month of January in the traditional poll of Press Club Bulgaria.
A total of 24 sports editors participated in the voting, and 11 of them voted for Deya Sport. Seven votes went to the women’s epee national team for the gold medal at the Tashkent World Cup, who finished second. Third is the national volleyball team of Bulgaria for youth under 20 years of age, which, under the leadership of Miroslav Zhivkov, qualified for the European Championship.
The recognition of the sports journalists to VK Deya comes for winning the Bulgarian Cup in January, with the Burgasians lifting their first trophy in the club window.
With this, Deja’s volleyball players became Team of the Month for the first time in their history.
“Thank you very much that our work is appreciated. It is good to have recognition for sports and to reward athletes monthly. This is also a good example for the younger competitors. Georgi Kazakov and I have created this club and step by step we reached the Bulgarian Cup”, said the president of the club Dr. Alexander Madjurov after the award ceremony and added that despite being the leader in the temporary ranking, VK Deya is still not thinking about participation in the Champions League next season.
“Our participation in the Champions League is far from decided, because playoffs are played in the championship and they give everyone a chance to become champion. We have at least two more wins than our rivals, but that does not reassure us. We are aware of the challenges of the Champions League. Even if we make an overselection for our standards, it is almost impossible to do anything against the giants from Italy, Turkey, Poland… If there is at least one team of the middle European level in the group, we can fight against them to win, and against the giants we can do decent result. But we are very far from beating teams like Perugia Trento etc. The dimensions are radically different, and we are really aware of that,” said Dr. Madjurov.
The head coach of the team, Francesco Cadedu, also thanked for the recognition.
“I think it’s deserved to be the No. 1 Team for January because we brought home a cup, which is a first for us and that’s why it’s very valuable. My team and the competitors deserve first place every month because I know what they do every day in practice. What I want from them, I always get, and I can only be happy. That’s why we move forward. There are different players in the team, some are from recently and others from a long time ago, but the goal is the same. It’s no mystery that I get angry sometimes, but coaching a team isn’t easy. As in a family, there is both love and quarrels, but in the end there are two options left – either to destroy everything or to move on. We as a club, as a team, have decided to move forward and I hope to become the number 1 team for April or May when the championship ends,” said the Italian.
In total, the visit to the media in Pressclub Bulgaria is the second in a row, the first time being in 2018, when the team entered the volleyball elite.
On behalf of the club, the award was accepted by the president Alexander Madjurov, sports director Georgi Kazakov, head coach Francesco Cadedu and central blocker Nikolay Nikolov.
