An article published by the official media Escambray inadvertently confirmed that the shortage in Cuba has reached critical levels, since, at least in Sancti Spíritus, they do not have the necessary resources to prepare corpses before a wake.
According to citizen Alberto Luis Gómez Rodríguez, who is dedicated to preparing bodies before a funeral in the aforementioned province, his job has become much more difficult in recent months due to the serious economic crisis that the Island is going through.
“It’s hard, because here we lack the material that was previously in stock, like makeup, for example, razors and other resources,” said the man.
The interview conducted by the state media also revealed that the relatives of the deceased must help the professional, this to give a dignified last goodbye to their loved one.
“We always count on the collaboration of family members who, despite the suffering, support us and collaborate with some of these products and we are grateful, because this way we cover any needs that may exist,” he added.
Gómez indicated that, before starting to work in funeral services, he spent 12 years working in the coffin factory. As he explained, the biggest challenge is reconstructing the faces of those who suffer a traffic accident, a task that is even more complicated due to the current situation in the country.
In situations where it would be very difficult or impossible to carry out this task, he points out that he should talk to the family to convince them to seal the coffin and memorialize the deceased with a photo.
“For a long time I had been coming to the funeral home to see how the preparation of the body was carried out, because it is not only about the arrangement of hair and clothing, but also about the makeup that is used to hide a bruise, shaving in the case of a man, Filling the cavities of the face, ears and nostrils, in short, is a detailed job that requires patience and care,” added Gómez Rodríguez, highlighting the importance of this work.
The man’s work includes carrying out practices that help with the conservation, embalming, restoration, reconstruction and aesthetic care of the body, something important for many families when carrying out a funeral, so it is difficult to know that this noble work is suffering. due to the scarcity of resources on the Island.
This adds to the deterioration in the infrastructure of cemeteries in Cuba, which causes many tombs to be found open and sometimes lootedleading many to believe that ordinary Cubans cannot even rest in peace due to the economic crisis.
