Airbnb bases its marketing strategy beyond sales, focusing on educating to strengthen its brand and thus diversify and reinvent the lodging rental platform’s business. Airbnb places importance on creating alliances with companies that want to grow alongside the brand, said Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb.
Chesky noted during the fourth quarter 2023 results presentation that they have a very different marketing approach than their competitors. “We think of advertising more as education than sales,” he said, referring to his latest “Get An Airbnb” campaign that teaches about the advantages of taking a trip with the company, which was successful.
The executive told about his collaboration with Mattel for the creation of Barbie Dreamhouse that coincided with the premiere of the film. “Hopefully we continue to be relevant within the culture. And, if we can then convert that traffic… through product optimization, reliability efforts and better customer service, then I think there are a lot of opportunities,” also referring to attracting new customers for the brand.
The CEO highlighted Airbnb’s three goals for 2024, including making lodging mainstream, perfecting the core business, and expanding beyond that core. “We have always believed that Airbnb was meant to offer more than just a place to stay. And now is the time to expand beyond our core business and reinvent Airbnb,” Chesky commented, as reported by Mercado Negro.
