President Biden Urges Emergency Assistance for Ukraine as Troops Withdraw from Avdiivka, Donetsk Region

President of the United States of America Joe Biden responded to the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Avdiivka, Donetsk region. He believes that such a decision had to be made, in particular, because of American legislators, who still have not approved the provision of emergency assistance to Ukraine.

This is stated in a statement published on White House website. It is noted that on February 17, Biden called President Zelensky to emphasize the United States’ commitment to continue to support Ukraine. The conversation took place on the eve of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion.

“This morning (February 17 – ed.), the Ukrainian military was forced to withdraw from Avdiivka after Ukrainian soldiers had to ration ammunition due to dwindling supplies due to Congressional inaction, leading to Russia’s first notable successes in months. President Biden emphasized “that Congress must urgently pass legislation to provide additional national security funding to resupply Ukrainian forces,” the statement said.

Withdrawal of troops from Avdeevka

In recent weeks, the situation in Avdeevka, Donetsk region, has worsened significantly. The Russians threw significant resources there, the ratio of troops was 1:7, and sometimes more. A few days ago, soldiers of the 3rd separate assault brigade were redeployed there.

On February 17, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky, announced that the Ukrainian military was being withdrawn from Avdiivka. He emphasized that during the defensive operation considerable losses were inflicted on the enemy army.

President Vladimir Zelensky expressed confidence that Ukraine will return Avdiivka: “We want to save the lives of our guys. I am glad that the military command has such a correct, balanced decision. (…) We will return everything. We will not give anything to these murderers, I am sure about that”.
