Borussia Dortmund failed to win the last Bundesliga match before the Champions League cracker in the round of 16 against PSV on Saturday. Without the passed Donyell Malen, coach Edin Terzic’s team could not get further than 1-1 at VfL Wolfsburg. Leader Bayer Leverkusen won, partly due to a goal from Jeremie Frimpong.
Through Niclas Füllkrug, Dortmund took the lead against Wolfsburg after eight minutes, but the score was level again in the 66th minute. Yannick Gerhardt made it 1-1 for the middle team and that was it.
Malen remained on the bench for ninety minutes, although he scored twice in the league match against SC Freiburg (3-0) a week ago.
Ian Maatsen, the other Dutchman from Dortmund, did have a starting place. The left back completed the ninety minutes three days before the match against PSV. The first confrontation between Dortmund and PSV is on Tuesday in the Philips Stadium and the return is scheduled for March 13 in Signal Iduna Park.

Frimpong opens score with wrong foot for Leverkusen
Frimpong scores seventh goal of the season
Leverkusen was too strong for FC Heidenheim with 1-2. Frimpong had a starting place for the away team and scored the 0-1 in extra time of the first half. The wingback shot in a cross from Amine Adli. It was the seventh goal for the 23-year-old Frimpong this Bundesliga season, while he also provided six assists. Last week, the single Dutch international scored the third goal in the top match against Bayern Munich (3-0).
Adli scored the 0-2 for Leverkusen against Heidenheim nine minutes before the end, after which striker Tim Kleindienst reduced the tension just before the end. Without the substituted Frimpong, Leverkusen held out in the final minutes.
With the victory over Heidenheim, Leverkusen is one step closer to the club’s first ever league title. The 2002 Champions League finalist now has eight points ahead of Bayern Munich, which visits VfL Bochum on Sunday.

Van den Berg heads in the second goal into Mainz’s shirt
Van den Berg match winner for Mainz
At Mainz 05, Sepp van den Berg was the celebrated man. The former Dutch youth international headed home against FC Augsburg in the 43rd minute and was crowned the match winner (1-0). Nadiem Amiri should also have scored for the home team, but he missed a penalty in extra time of the first half.
It was 22-year-old Van den Berg’s 2nd Bundesliga goal for Mainz, which rents him from Liverpool. At Augsburg, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw completed the ninety minutes and Mads Pedersen was sent off just before the end.
The victory over Augsburg is the first three-pointer for Mainz since November 4. The club, which has been playing at the highest level continuously since 2009, is fighting against relegation. Darmstadt 98 also has to fear relegation. The team of coach Torsten Lieberknecht lost 1-2 at home to VfB Stuttgart. Serhou Guirassy and Mahmoud Dahoud scored for the visitors and Aaron Seydel was accurate for Darmstadt.

Toy cars and tennis balls disrupt Bundesliga match
Weghorst falls outside the Hoffenheim base
At Hoffenheim, Wout Weghorst had to start on the bench. The Dutch international was furious last week after his substitution against FC Köln and now he was left out of the starting line-up in the home game against FC Union Berlin.
Weghorst was allowed to come on after 29 minutes, but he could not prevent Hoffenheim from losing 1-0. On a pass from former PSV player Yorbe Vertessen, American Brenden Aaronson scored the only goal of the match in the PreZero Arena in the 84th minute.
Vertessen came on as a substitute for Union in the 66th minute, while Danilho Doekhi played the entire match. The goal came in the 84th minute.
Just like last weekend, several Bundesliga matches were temporarily stopped on Saturday. Supporters threw tennis balls onto the field, among other things, in protest against the plan to allow investors in German professional football.
