The New York police have intensified operations against illegal motorcycles in recent weeks, where they have seized more than 170 scooters that were circulating illegally on the streets of the Big Apple.
In Queens alone, authorities have carried out at least three operations, several of them outside immigrant shelters, where they have imposed fines and confiscated these vehicles that do not have permits.
Last week they seized 176 of these motorcycles in operations carried out in areas such as Woodside and Long Island City.
The district attorney Melinda Katz assured that many of these vehicles are used in shootings or to commit robberies.
“Unregistered scooters are used to commit violent crimes including robberies and shootings,” he explained.
“In collaboration with the NYPD we have seized almost 200 of these illegal vehicles in one week and we will continue working,” he added.
Yesterday, the operations continued in Brooklyn, where in the Flatbush area they seized another 24 scooters that did not have permits to circulate.
They find motorcycles with altered license plates during operations
The New York police reported that during these operations to seize the motorcycles they have found that several have altered blades.
In a video released by the authorities they show the moment in which, during a seizure, they see a motorcycle with an altered license plate.
The letter G was changed to an O on the sheet by placing plastic on it and thus trying to deceive the authorities
“We are configuring scooters and scooters in Queens, we are discovering that some have altered blades to evade bridge tolls and speed cameras,” said police Sergeant Losada.
“We want to send a message that this will not be tolerated in New York City,” he added.
