Starting tomorrow (the 18th), Hokkaido is expected to experience record high temperatures that will break the previous February record. The snow will continue to melt as temperatures exceed the high temperatures experienced the other day (from the 13th to the 14th). Road conditions will be as bad or worse than last time, increasing the risk of vehicles getting stuck. Additionally, in areas with heavy snowfall, snow is more likely to fall from roofs, making it extremely dangerous to remove snow from under eaves and roofs. Please take steps to protect yourself.
Warm air flows into the sky, similar to when cherry blossoms bloom.
In mid-February, the area around Hokkaido has barely passed the coldest season of the year, and is still very cold. However, from tomorrow (the 18th) until around Monday the 19th, extremely warm air will flow into the sky at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, with temperatures nearly 20 degrees Celsius higher than normal. If I were to describe it in terms of season, it would be around early to mid-May, when the cherry blossoms in Hokkaido are in full bloom.
This influx of warm air will cause temperatures to rise in many parts of Hokkaido. On the 18th, the highest temperature is expected to be broadly similar to that of early to mid-April, and on the 19th, the highest temperature is expected to be similar to that of late April to early May.
From the 13th to the 14th, the maximum temperature was broadly comparable to mid-April. In such cases, large puddles form, private cars, trucks, buses, etc. get stuck on Nakadori, people get caught in falling snow from roofs, and people fall off roofs while removing snow. It happened a lot in all directions. Temperatures will rise even more on the 19th, so the impact will be even more widespread, and there is a risk of flooding of roads in low-lying areas and the occurrence of avalanches.
In particular, falling snow from the roof can be life-threatening, so be careful not to go near under the eaves or remove snow from the roof, and if you absolutely must remove snow, be sure to take measures to prevent falling.
Forecast to exceed the previous highest temperature in February of 15.8℃ in Hokkaido
The maximum temperature on the 19th is expected to be 12℃ in Muroran and Abashiri, 13℃ in Sapporo, and 15℃ in Hakodate. The highest temperatures in statistical history for February in each city up until today (17th) are Muroran 11.4℃, Abashiri 11.1℃, Sapporo 11.2℃, and Hakodate 13.6℃, which have already exceeded these records at the predicted maximum temperature level.
The highest temperature observed in February in Hokkaido was Utoro, Shari Town in the Abashiri region, which recorded a temperature of 15.8℃ on February 25, 2010.
