Guatemala Police captured 120 involved in extortion in 2024 – 2024-02-17 02:33:16

The National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala reported that from the beginning of January until this Thursday the 15th, they captured 120 people involved in extortion, an evil that afflicts the country.

We reached that figure through a diligence in Villas de San Martín, in the capital municipality of San Miguel Petapa, stressed the spokesperson for the military force, Jorge Aguilar, who specified the capture of Yeni “N”, 45 years old.

Investigators from the National Division against the Criminal Development of Gangs complied with two orders requested against that person from November 3, 2023 and January 29 of this year by courts in Quetzaltenango and Guatemala, he described.

The PNC spokesperson referred in that case to crimes of extortion and extortion on a continuous basis, due to illegal charges being made to citizens.

The Minister of the Interior Francisco Jiménez promoted specialized mega-operations in prisons in order to control the crime caused from those premises, in the opinion of experts the origin of the scourge.

President Bernardo Arévalo, when presenting the milestones of the first 30 days of his administration the day before, expressed that Guatemala is moving forward by fighting extortion.

During this time, PNC units carried out nine searches, in different prisons, to remove the illegal material with which this phenomenon is carried out, he highlighted.

The Specialized Group against Extortion was also inaugurated, which will have 440 agents dedicated exclusively to preventing it and capturing its extortors, the president added.

We arrested 94 extortion suspects thanks to this deployment and two structures were dismantled and captured, thereby preventing at least 117 homicides, the 65-year-old politician explained.

One of the main challenges for the head of state and his administration, according to local analysts, is citizen insecurity throughout this Central American territory.

The Ministry of the Interior of Guatemala also intensified actions in the border departments against organized crime, violence and smuggling.
