Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny Dies in Prison as World Leaders Accuse Putin of Assassination

Alexei Anatolievich Navalny, the last leader of the Russian opposition, died at the age of 47 in the prison where Vladimir Putin had locked him up, 60 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. According to the doctors who attempted to resuscitate him, cited by Russian sources, his death was caused by thrombosis “after a walk”, as the hour of frosty air is perhaps defined in Siberia. According to the family and many Western leaders, it was instead an assassination whose instigator was Putin, who had already attempted to have him killed in 2020 with a Novichok-class nerve agent. «Vladimir Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death – said American President Joe Biden in a conference – I am not surprised and at the same time I am shocked. What happened is proof of Putin’s brutality.” Last December, Navalny disappeared from the prison in the Vladimir region where he had been locked up after his return to Russia in 2021. In January it became known that he had been transferred to IK-3, the worst penitentiary in the country, called the ” polar wolf”, where prisoners lose all their teeth due to poor nutrition. He had to serve there 19 of the 30 years in prison that had been inflicted on him on general charges of extremism. Despite the harsh conditions of detention he was fine.

Navalny, Tajani: «Let’s hope it was a natural death»

Navalny, the last message

Last Wednesday he had seen his lawyer, on Thursday he spoke via video to a court to which he had turned to protest against the punishments that were repeatedly inflicted on him for unfastened buttons or other excuses. But he was cheerful and had joked with the judge asking him to send him some money, because he was running out of fines. According to his spokeswoman Kira Yarmish, Navalny had spent 308 days in solitary confinement over the last year and a half. In her last message he wrote: «They just gave me 15 days in a punishment cell. It’s the fourth in less than two months.” A cold press release announced his death: «On 16 February 2024 – says the text – in correctional colony no. 3, the detained Navalny AA felt ill after a walk, losing consciousness. The resuscitation measures did not give positive results.” An autopsy will be needed, but who knows when, if, and by whom it will be done, to ascertain the causes of death but the family has no doubts: «I would like Putin, his friends, his government – said his informed wife Yulia while attending the Munich security conference – knew that they will be punished for what they did to our country, to my family and to my husband.”

The reactions

Speaking from the stage to the delegates, and moving everyone, he added: «What should I do? Leave the conference or stay here and give my speech? I will do as he would have done, I will stay here to defend the principles for which he fought.” For Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky there is no doubt: «he was killed, and Putin will have to account for his crimes». The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, wrote in X that “the European Union holds the Russian regime solely responsible for this tragic death.” “A sad reminder of what Putin and his regime represent,” added Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, called for a “transparent investigation”. Moscow responded with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova: «The reaction of NATO leaders, in the form of accusations directed against Russia, shows the nature of these countries. There is no forensic examination yet, but the West’s conclusions are already ready.” Not in Italy, given the very prudent declaration of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni: «Navalny’s death, during his detention, is another sad page that warns the international community. We express our heartfelt condolences and hope that this disturbing event will be fully clarified.” A prudence also shared by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, “very affected by Navalny’s death after years of persecution and prison”. In Moscow, when the news broke, hundreds of bouquets of flowers were placed by people at the Solovetsky memorial, which commemorates the victims of Stalin’s repression. There were so many flowers that they covered the monument. But Putin is silent: from 15 to 17 March there will be elections that will confirm him in power for a fifth term. He will soon beat Stalin as Russia’s longest-serving leader, and perhaps even as the president with the fewest opponents still alive.
