The departure of the German coach occurred against the backdrop of a conflict between team players Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in during the 2023 Asian Cup. South Korea reached the semi-finals of the tournament, where they unexpectedly lost to Jordan with a score of 0:2. South Korea has not won the Asian Cup since 1960.

Recall that Klinsmann took over the South Korean national team in February 2023. Under his leadership, the team played 17 matches, winning 9 and suffering 5 defeats.
