Ukrainian Military Intelligence Chief Speaks Out on Wife’s Poisoning: Blames Russian Secret Services for Assassination Attempts

The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, Kirill Budanov, spoke openly about the poisoning of his wife last year in an interview. “My wife is doing better. Since I was not poisoned, it is difficult for me to say whether it was an assassination attempt against me,” Budanov told the French newspaper “Libération”. “But I’ve already survived many assassination attempts and will probably survive many more.”

When asked if he knew who was responsible for the poisoning, Budanov replied: “Of course I do!” He added:

“I think that in the near future you will see appropriate actions on the territory of Russia, and everyone will understand this.”

At the end of November, Ukrainian media reported that Marianna Budanova had been hospitalized after complaining of nausea for several days. Ukrainska Pravda newspaper quoted an informant who claimed that the 30-year-old woman was given food poisoned with arsenic and mercury. Several Secret Service officers were also poisoned.

At the end of January, the newspaper “Kyiv Post” reported that Budanova’s condition was “much better”. According to this information, she is still being treated in Ukraine. Since the massive Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Budanov and his wife have lived together around the clock for security reasons.

Russian secret services have been repeatedly accused of using poisonous substances against opponents of the Moscow regime. Anna Politkovska, a journalist critical of the Kremlin, was diagnosed with severe poisoning after a flight in 2004. Two years later, she was shot in Moscow.

That same year, Putin critic Alexander Litvinenko died in London after an assassination attempt using the radioactive poison polonium. In 2020, opposition activist Alexei Navalny narrowly survived after being poisoned with “novichok”. Navalny, now 47, has died in a Russian penal colony. According to Ukrainian sources, Budanov has so far survived at least ten assassination attempts.
