Revolutionary LED Basketball Court Technology Debuts at NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis

Two NBA games in February will be played on giant LED screens that take up the entire basketball court, marking the first time the technology has been unveiled in the United States. These screens can perform a variety of functions while also being able to withstand the impact of basketball game events.

The screen can display live statistics, replays and position-based player tracking animations during games. They can also embellish important matches with additional video content, audience interaction during breaks and animations to make events more lively. Inventor ASB GlassFloor uses proprietary software to operate the display.

The stadium LED display has the function of a central scoreboard and video display without taking the audience’s eyes away from the stadium. In addition, digital displays allow stadium operators to quickly and easily change the design and color of the stadium without having to repaint it. ASB has also developed apps to help players train using the screen’s tracking capabilities.

Last year, European stadiums demonstrated the technology in action. It made its debut at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Madrid and at the kick-off ceremony of the Bundesliga at BMW Park in Munich, where a German basketball league was played on the LED court.

Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis will host ASB GlassFloor’s first U.S. events, the Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on February 16 at 7 p.m. ET and the Ruffles NBA All-Star Game on February 17 at 8 p.m. State Farm All-Star Saturday Night. Saturday Night” events include the Kia Skills Challenge, STARRY 3-Point Contest, the first-ever NBA vs. WNBA 3-Point Challenge and the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest.

Because the technology is still in its infancy, it’s difficult to say whether LED courts will become commonplace quickly. This will largely depend on its cost, ease of installation (videos from European events provide a glimpse into the installation process) and the overall benefit to the stadium. ASB has also tested its technology for handball, volleyball, badminton, tennis and other hard-court sports.
