This was stated by Vanya Grigorova in her speech during the Eighth meeting of the XIV Conference of the Sofia City Organization of the BSP. At it, she was unanimously approved as a candidate of the socialist party for mayor of Sofia and was elected as the leader of the list of municipal councilors. “Only a united front can stand effectively against the emerging dictatorship. On the left, the time has come for a gathering, not for new divisions, she added. – They rule us with a “assembly”, as they themselves called it. They hope that their number will pass a second time”.
Vanya Grigorova thanked all regional BSP organizations and the hundreds of socialists who nominated her as a candidate for mayor of the capital. “I thank the management of the BSP – Sofia for believing in me, as well as Mrs. Kornelia Ninova, who in a personal conversation expressed her positive attitude towards my candidacy. I believe that this is an objective assessment of my activity as a trade unionist, the candidate also said for the mayor of Sofia. – I decided to accept the invitation. For me, it was not an easy decision – to break away from the profession I like and risk everything on a personal level”.
She gave several reasons for accepting the challenge and running for metropolitan mayor. “The millionaires now want the power directly, not through their political puppets. I cannot accept this, commented Vanya Grigorova. – The goal is to continue the robbery of Sofia, which began 33 years ago with the ideology “Everything is a market!”. They took the water , they took the mountain, ransacked Sofia’s properties, they didn’t forget to take away even the garbage. So that there would be no kindergartens, no municipal housing, no normal streets and greenery in the neighborhoods.”
Grigorova also quotes the words of Dr. Petar Dertliev, spoken when he was a guest at the 44th Congress of the BSP in May 2000: “A llama is walking around our land, swallowing factories, swallowing hospitals, swallowing people. Bulgaria is disappearing in the greedy maw of self-forgotten people. A predatory, dirty, nasty stratum is robbing the Bulgarian people”.
“Go back to this speech, find it on the Internet if you have forgotten it, and you will see how relevant it sounds, even though 23 years have passed since then. In this situation, no one has the right to be indifferent. Everyone must take their responsibility. The situation is non-standard and requires non-standard solutions, she said. “In order to concrete their power, usurped by fraud, the rulers are preparing to change the Constitution as well. But against the accounts of the assemblers, we must wake up the real constitutional majority – that of the working Sofians, filling every budget and shouldering the weight of each subsequent crisis. Though disenchanted, demotivated, tired and increasingly non-voting, they must realize their power. We will encourage them to do so. Again I will recall words from that speech that: ” There is no party in Bulgaria that is capable of bringing the country to the rescue shore alone. Even the sum of the parties is not enough for that. It must be governed with “the talent of the whole people, with skillful hands and clever heads.” That is why I insist on the presence in the list of trade unionists, representatives of the working people of Sofia from significant sectors of the economy. That’s why my appeal is: “Let personal ambitions and party egoism fade into the background!”.
Vanya Grigorova also said that although supposedly temporary, the government is behaving like wartime. “And a big victory in the assembly and in the local elections will unblock a process not only of changes in the Constitution, but also of dismantling monuments, of crossing streets and even of temples, of changing our national holiday. A process of replacing our entire DNA as a people, of erasing the collective memory. Will we allow this, she asked. “And now imagine what the effect will be across the country if we manage to stop all this in Sofia! The emerging dictatorship in essence can be faced effectively only a united front. The time has come for the Left to come together, not for new divisions. I believe there is no more retreat. Not a step back! Our cause is right and… Victory will be ours!”.
