Romelu Lukaku (30) used his goal in the Europa League on Thursday evening to draw attention to the rapidly deteriorating situation in Congo. “Free DR Congo. Stop the genocide,” the Red Devil wrote afterwards on Instagram.
Romelu Lukaku erased the deficit of his club AS Roma in the European match on Feyenoord’s field in the second half. After his equalizer, Lukaku posed for the cameras with one hand over his mouth and two fingers of the other hand like a gun to his temple. The national team of the Democratic Republic of Congo also did this earlier this month during the Africa Cup. Shortly after the match, Lukaku also shared the photo on Instagram himself, with a statement. “Free DR Congo, stop the genocide,” he wrote.
With the statement, Lukaku wants to draw attention to the deadly violence that has recently escalated again in DR Congo, where his roots lie. The Congolese army is fighting the rebel group M23, an armed militia that receives the support of neighboring Rwanda. It is a conflict that receives much less international attention than the wars in Ukraine and Israel-Palestine.
