You still have to be patient for almost two months, but from April 11th to 13th the time has come: the Styrian Sounds Festival, the festival of Styrian pop culture, is celebrating its tenth birthday. Now Didi Tschmelak has announced the first names – so there will be release shows from bands like Grand Hotel Schilling, Red Eyes, Coinflip Cutie, Modest Oda, Anna Absolut and many others and the cult band The Incredible Staggers is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their iconic debut single “Wild Teeens” with a best-of concert including new songs. Occurs as a “national hotspot”. With on, the opening is being done by the Graz Brass collective Good band with a “Festival Fanfare” for the tenth anniversary.
Styrian Sounds is also a must salon, “the current scene hero with sold-out shows from Vienna to Berlin, a (South) Styrian force of nature and virtually invincible live,” as Tschmelak describes. By the way, he is also in the running for the FM4 Award 2024 at the most important Austrian music award Amadeus. Resi Reiner is also on the longlist. For the two (and for 18 other acts) it was possible until February 15th with this link be coordinated. On March 5th, FM4 will announce who has made it onto the shortlist.

The Little Death: “Sand”
Apart from that, there are also some exciting new releases – including a very interesting debut: The Little Death is the name of the music project Berit Gilmaartist, curator and art director living in Graz and Los Angeles, who now also sings, and FM4 journalist and musician Christian Fuchs. They re-recorded the single “Sand” by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, who sang about the fleeting affair between a young woman and an older man in 1967. The song premiered in “FM4 Im Marsh” and even made it into one of the official Spotify playlists – but another special feature is the video that Marlon Fink and Claus Prinz recorded in a very special place, namely Gilma’s mother’s water lily nursery St. Peter and a nearby, enchanted pond. By the way, it won’t stop at the debut song; more material is in the works.
Son of the Velvet Rat: „Rosary“
Georg Altziebler and Heike Binder alias Son of the Velvet Rat released a new single “Rosary” in January – and with prominent musical guests: The Texan folk singer Jolie Holland can be heard on voice and violin, an indie avant-garde guitarist Marc Ribot plays the electric guitar. The black and white video by Gordon Clark is well worth seeing.
Facelift: „You gonna find me“
For the new songs by the Graz indie cult band Facelift, Clemens Berger not only worked with new singers such as Schauspielhaus ensemble member Sapho Meyer, there is also a re-hearing with Andrea Orso, one of the first women in the Austrian music scene in the early 2000s. “You gonna find me” is a track about false friendships, missed opportunities, rejection and ridicule – and it also sounds a little like back then.

Oxyjane: „Addicted“
The Graz grunge-pop band Oxyjane is back this year with a second album, from which you can already hear the song “Addicted”. It’s about the “inner turmoil that arises when you’re caught up in everyday life while emotional fog and addiction surround you.”
Interstellar Bungalow: „Do I wanna take care of my heart just once?“
And Selina Galka’s other band, Interstellar Bungalow, also has new material. On February 23rd, “Helix”, the first album by the Graz-based “Indierock-Slacker”, will be released, followed by the lofi pop single “Do I want to take care of my heart just once?” on Wilhelm Show Me The Major Label. You can see the band live on February 28th in the Postgarage.
