During this Spring Festival, Taiwanese “niche” Chen Yuxuan’s drama appointments are scheduled from the first day of the Lunar New Year to the Lantern Festival. It can be said that there are “continuous dramas”.

On the first day of the first lunar month (February 10), the Fenggui Grand Stage boutique performance in Hualin Village, Fotan Town, Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province; on the fourth day of the first lunar month (February 13), Jinli Palace, Haicheng Town, Longhai District, Zhangzhou City New Year’s Gala; on the fifth day of the first lunar month (February 14), Penglai Town, Anxi County, Quanzhou City… Chen Yuxuan may be dressed in festive red clothes and take the stage to sing the original Hokkien song “Looking for the Name of My Hometown”, or put on costumes , full of color, playing the role of historical figures in the play.

Although it is hard work, you can feel the audience’s enthusiasm for Xiang Opera and Gezi Opera everywhere you go. “There are fans who come here because of it. Before the performance, some grandparents take out chairs to take seats and ask each other in Hokkien.” ‘Where is that Taiwan guy?’ I felt very friendly and happy.”

Gezi Opera originated from Jin Ge in Zhangzhou. It absorbed Taiwanese customs and characteristics and was introduced to Zhangzhou. After a hundred years of inheritance and improvement, it has formed today’s Xiang Opera.

From being admitted to the National Taiwan Opera Academy in 1994 to joining the Fenggui Cultural Xiang Opera Troupe of Fujian Province in 2022, singing authentic Gezi Opera for the people of southern Fujian, Chen Yuxuan laughed and said that he had “come full circle and returned to his profession.”

Chen Yuxuan and her younger sister Chen Yuan were both students in the first batch of Taiwan Opera Academy. Tang Meiyun, Chen Xiaomi, Xu Xiunian, Shi Huijun and other famous Taiwanese opera masters were their first teachers. Recalling the art studies at that time, Chen Yuxuan felt that it was very similar to what he played in the mainland movie “Farewell My Concubine”: he got up at 5:30 every morning to practice, from body posture, singing, stage positions to cultural classes. After eight years of hard study, he laid a solid foundation. Foundation.

As soon as he graduated, Chen Yuxuan joined Taiwan’s Heluo Gezi Opera Troupe and was invited to perform and exchange in Singapore, Japan, the United States and other places.

In 2017, Chen Yuxuan gave up art to pursue business and came to Xiamen with his family to develop. By chance, the Fujian Fenggui Cultural Xiang Troupe took notice of her background in opera and invited her to join it as soon as it was established.

“My sister has always insisted on singing opera in Taiwan. I should not forget what the teacher taught me. I must apply what I have learned and at the same time join in the upsurge of cross-strait cultural exchanges and create a different spark.” So, Chen Yuxuan became the Fujian Provincial Director. A member of the Fenggui Wenxiang Troupe, he takes root on the rural stage as a “niche” and puts into practice what he has learned.

When she first joined the troupe, Chen Yuxuan was a little uncomfortable because the singing style of Xiang opera was different from that of Gezi opera, with higher tunes. Moreover, when she was in Taiwan, she mostly performed on theater stages, but now she often performs in villages, setting up tents and setting up stages with her colleagues in the theater troupe. Everything has to be done by herself.

“After slowly getting used to it, we became more and more like a family.” Chen Yuxuan said that the culture, language, and eating habits of Zhangpu are very similar to those of Taiwan, which made her feel warmer; she also decorated the room prepared for her by the troupe. It looks like they are married. After the performance, they go home and spend time with their “family”, which is harmonious and harmonious.

Because of Chen Yuxuan’s joining, Fenggui Wenxiang Troupe specially composed some Taiwanese tunes for her to sing, thus attracting more “fans”. Chen Yuxuan, who often discusses singing skills with her sister across the Taiwan Strait, feels that the collision of cross-strait cultures has brought more people to pay attention to Xiang opera, which is a very good thing.

During this Spring Festival, Chen Yuxuan briefly got together with his family on the 27th to 29th of the twelfth lunar month. After having an early reunion dinner, he devoted himself to performing one performance after another. “After being busy, everyone gathers around the fire in the troupe, which creates a special New Year atmosphere.”

In the new year, Chen Yuxuan’s wish is to buy a house in Zhangpu and live here with his family. She also hopes that more Taiwanese opera talents will come to the mainland to develop. “I hope that through Fenggui or me, we can have more exchanges in opera culture across the Taiwan Strait and create more different sparks.” Chen Yuxuan said.
