NEW YORK — Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth and Zendaya will join Vogue’s Anna Wintour as co-chairs of this year’s Met Gala, the magazine and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York revealed Thursday.
What will be the dress code? The organizers chose “The Garden of Time”, or “The Garden of Time“, a theme that celebrities will use to inspire them to design their dresses and walk up the stairs of the museum on the first Monday in May as part of the eye-catching charity event.
The dress code ties into the theme of this year’s May 6 gala, which aligns with the spring exhibition at the Met’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme is “Sleeping Beauties: The Awakening of Fashion” or “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. The reference, however, is not to the fairy tale, but to the treasured garments in the Costume Institute’s vast collection, some too fragile to hang upright. The museum’s curators will place them in display cases, like Sleeping Beauty herself.
Curator Andrew Bolton, mastermind behind the Met’s blockbuster fashion exhibitions, said at a preview in November that he was looking for a way to literally bring to life a collection of 33,000 pieces, many of which are never seen. He has chosen around 250 of them and will organize the show around themes of land, sea and sky.
The gala serves as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute and provides the majority of its annual budget. To date, the event has raised more than $223.5 million, according to the Met.
The pre-carpet is one of the biggest pop culture shows of the year with stars like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Billy Porter and Rihanna wearing outfits tailored to the night’s theme.
This is Bad Bunny’s third year at the gala and the first for Hemsworth. López has been on the guest list 13 times and Zendaya five.
The honorary chairs are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. TikTok is the sponsor of the gala, with the support of Loewe.
The exhibition will be open from May 10 to September 2, 2024.
