The Governments of Cuba and South Korea established diplomatic and consular relations this Wednesday, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the largest of the Antilles.

Through a statement, the Cuban Foreign Ministry noted that the links were established through an exchange of Diplomatic Notes carried out between the Permanent Representations of both countries to the United Nations, in New York.

“The establishment of official relations between both countries was carried out in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, International Law and in accordance with the spirit and norms established in the Vienna Convention on Foreign Relations. Diplomatic Letters of April 18, 1961,” reads the brief note.

The ties between both countries began in 1949 when Havana recognized the officially called Republic of Korea, which were interrupted in 1959 after the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution.

In May 2016, the chambers of commerce of Cuba and South Korea signed a memorandum of understanding in order to promote bilateral cooperation, especially the exchange of information related to business.

“Cuba is a potential market in the medical and tourism businesses on the American continent,” Seoul’s Ministry of Strategic Planning and Finance noted at the time.
