More than 30 migrants detained in Austria and other European Union countries were returned to Bulgaria a few days ago under the Dublin Regulation. They are sent to the country where they first applied for refugee status. These actions provoked sharp reactions from the opposition in the parliament.
“Since the beginning of the year, about 60 people a month have been returned to Bulgaria under the Dublin Regulation. The number is close to that in 2023, there is no increase in the number. There is currently speculation about the topic. Since the beginning of 2024, our country has sent nearly 114 foreign citizens to their countries, which is much more than what we have received”, said the head of the sector in the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Yordan Kurtelov, in the “Interview in NOVA News” “.
“The Dublin Regulation, which we apply, is implemented by all member states of the European Union, including the Schengen countries. There are no exceptions. We cannot say that our country has made a commitment since it is for everyone”, he clarified and added that since the adoption of the Regulation in 2013, it has been implemented regularly.
Kurtelov explained that probably the people who got off the flights in handcuffs were not criminals. “For them, Bulgaria is a step back, a transit country. Their goal is Western Europe and they are opposed to their return,” said the head of the sector.
“Bulgaria is not threatened by the return of thousands of migrants. Our country is working very actively in returning these people to their country of origin. We are making efforts to control these processes”, stated Kurtelov categorically.
