DIY chain Handyman is making a new start. Part of the activities will be taken over by the Elka Pieterman Group. This is what curator Bart Louwerier said.

The chain’s webshop, which sells household items and parts, will therefore remain open. 14 of the 49 Handyman stores in the Netherlands can also continue. These stores were excluded from bankruptcy because they are franchisees.

Dismissed

The stores that the company managed in-house will close after this week. Employees at those locations will lose their jobs. It concerns about eighty people. The curator and the new owner are still looking for new franchisees for these stores.

It is striking that the Elka Pieterman Group, a wholesaler of electronic household accessories, falls under the same umbrella as Handyman. Both companies are owned by Sirrino Investments, according to data from the Chamber of Commerce.

According to the curator, several parties were interested in Handyman. “But the Elka Pieterman Group was the most suitable,” says curator Louwerier. “A restart is always a challenge and Handyman had an outdated formula.”

Handyman has been around since 1974 and was declared bankrupt at the end of January. According to the company, this was partly due to increased energy, wage and rental costs.
