The National Center for the Arts (Cenart), an institution of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, presents the cycle “The legacy of maestro Frederik Vanmelle”, which includes a discussion, three stagings and an intervention with which they seek to render tribute to the art of mime.

Frederik Vanmelle (Belgium, 1936-Mexico, 1985) is known as “the mime who fell in love with Mexico” and whose representation of “theater without words”, as he called it, demonstrated a new way of creating fantastic and suggestive environments and images. .

Vanmelle founded his Theater Frederik in Brussels in 1974, a company that he definitively established in 1978 in Mexico City and which generated highly successful works, both in our country and abroad. He tragically lost his life during the earthquake that shook our country in September 1985.

As part of the celebration of the 30 years of Cenart and in collaboration with Mima Escénica México, this cycle will be presented as a tribute. It begins on February 29, at 6:00 p.m., in the Aula Magna José Vasconcelos, with the discussion “Students and friends of Frederik”, in which Humberto Ibarra, a disciple of Vanmelle, Nora Manneck, José Natividad “Pethusso” will participate. , José Ángel Domínguez, Oscar Ortiz and Benjamín Santamaría.

The cycle includes the presentation of three performances at the Arts Forum: Mime Find, on Friday, March 1, at 8:00 p.m., where the mime Humberto Ibarra, accompanied by the guitar and voice of the troubadour Guillermo Santillán, walks along little-trodden paths, on a journey to spaces to imagine and a journey of love, justice , heartbreak and dreams.

Alaide Ibarra will perform the physical theater piece on Saturday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. Here and in Chinain which a Mexican woman, through facial gestures and body movements, shares different characters that may possibly be herself over time.

Finally, on Sunday, March 3, at 6:00 p.m., the mime Manuel Cisneros presents The waiterwhere he plays a waiter who, prior to a Teatro de Revista performance, cleans the forum and prepares the stage, but someone allowed the audience to enter, even though the actors of the show had not yet arrived.

Also on Sunday, March 3, at 12:00 p.m., in the Green Areas of Cenart, the intervention will be carried out The art of moving is not moving, which has the objective of touching the public with the art of mime and showing the different possibilities of communication. Free entrance.

The cycle “The Legacy of Maestro Frederik Vanmelle” seeks to exalt the art of mime, especially with regard to the contributions of the Belgian actor, whose basic tools are gestures and body movements without any hint of any verbal expression, which has allowed that this ancient theatrical manifestation remains today. It will take place from February 29 to March 3 in various spaces at Cenart. The staging will cost $150 pesos.
