They discover a rare medieval cemetery with 70 tombs of high-status people in the United Kingdom – – 2024-02-15 13:16:38

A group of archaeologists has discovered a rare medieval cemetery with 70 tombs of high-status people on the grounds of Fonmon Castle, located near Cardiff (Wales, United Kingdom), local media reported this Wednesday.

After two summers of work, researchers point out that they have already managed to excavate 18 graves that reveal strange burial positions, since some bodies appear to have been buried on their sides, while others were found with their knees drawn up.

Summer Courts, an osteoarchaeologist at the University of Reading who participated in the excavation, explained that the bones of the skeletons found – which are about 1,500 years old – are in excellent condition, so they can obtain a large amount of information from them in the analysis.

Fragments of fine Bordeaux glass and important pieces of ceramics were also found that could have come from places as far away as North Africa, suggesting that the buried people enjoyed a high status within the local society of the time.

Andy Seaman, an archaeologist at Cardiff University who is leading the excavation, said his team has “barely scratched the surface of the site,” saying he believes they will soon be able to uncover evidence indicating the site is more important than previously thought.
