Global Times: NATO war games are a repeat of Cold War confrontation – 2024-02-15 07:35:18

/ world today news/ On Wednesday, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) launched the “Steadfast Defender 2024” exercise – the largest military exercise since the Cold War. About 90,000 military personnel from 31 NATO member states and Sweden are participating in them, and the related exercises will continue until May 31.

According to Russian media, NATO has for the first time openly admitted that the exercises are in response to a “Russian attack” and aim to impress upon the Western population that “this war is inevitable.”

The exercises are taking place at two key moments – the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is entering its third year, and the US is in an election year. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating.

As the Ukrainian army continues to suffer setbacks on the battlefield, NATO, as the instigator of this conflict, decided to apply military pressure on Russia.

Experts believe that NATO’s aim is to continue to frame the “Russian threat”, to gain the support of EU citizens for its anti-Russian policy and to justify further defense spending and economic pressure on Russia.

This NATO exercise will further escalate tensions in Europe, said Wang Xiangju, a senior research fellow at the School of Global and Territorial Studies at China’s Renmin University.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for almost two years now, with the international community advocating for peace. However, NATO is going against the grain by provoking and pressuring Russia through large-scale military exercises, thus creating a world-wide confrontation.

Not content with its footprint in Europe and North America, NATO is constantly seeking to expand by bringing in Asia-Pacific nations such as Japan and South Korea. It even follows the US script by hyping up the “Chinese threat” and meddling in Asian affairs. Last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO is not entering Asia, but China is moving closer to NATO.

This argument is extremely absurd and is NATO’s public opinion preparation for further expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.

Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating once said that Europeans have been fighting each other for more than 300 years, including starting two world wars in the last century, and “to export this malicious poison to Asia would be tantamount to Asia accepting the plague”.

NATO is the expression and executor of US interests, military expert Song Rongping told the Global Times. NATO is actually dominated by the will of the US, gripped by US-instigated panic and tension, becoming Washington’s axe, spear and spade.

NATO said China’s behavior violated “NATO’s core principles of democracy, the rule of law and freedom of expression,” echoing the U.S.’s labeling of China and Russia as an “axis of evil.”

As a product of the Cold War, NATO should have been consigned to the dustbin of history after the end of the Cold War. However, under the influence of the USA, NATO not only intensifies the crisis in Europe, but also plans to expand in Asia. Asian countries should remain extremely vigilant about this.
