Zero incentives, sold out
We waited a long time for them, but within two weeks the long-awaited and necessary bonuses to improve circulation ended.
The debate around car incentives allocated by the Italian government is ready to revive in the face of what happened with the 2024 figures. Motorists have experienced a swing of emotions, between disappointment and happiness, but the effort is not over for them. With the money now at zero and the new declarations, many citizens have rebelled.
But let’s take a step back. The circulation incentives, valid for the purchase of electric, hybrid or thermal cars (and better for those who scrap old polluting vehicles) have been designed and created to encourage the conversion to electric of the Italian automotive world. It’s all part of the fight against pollution.
The 2023 incentives were a success and they were followed by the promise of larger funds for this year, for 2024; However, since January had already begun, there was no news on the matter. The government then activated the incentives with the same figures as last year, promising that further funds would arrive later.
The incentive platform was made active on January 23rd and has seen large user traffic, who ran out of incentive money in just two weeks. Now all the other motorists are left with crumbs and have to wait a long time before the new incentives. When they will arrive?
Incentives going down
What dashed motorists’ hopes was to discover that the additional incentives arriving in March this year will be lower than those in January. If until now it was possible to get up to 2 thousand euros for the purchase of a combustion car (with the scrapping of a car from Euro 4 to 0), in March the sum will drop to 1,500 euros.
This news has been a determining factor in recent weeks: many people were waiting for further communications from the government, but upon discovering that in March they would receive 500 euros on the menu, motorists flocked to the platform and they used up all the incentive fund.
The figures for the rest of 2024
2024 incentives: how will they work?
The 2024 incentives will start around mid-March and will add several million to those already available from January 23rd. For thermal cars (emission range 61-135 g/km of CO2) 283 million will be added to the original 120; for hybrids (21-60 g/km) and electrics (0-20 g/km) the funds never run out, so they will remain available.
It’s about around 230 million for hybrids and around 187 million for electric ones. These numbers make us understand that the users who use the incentives the most are not yet ready to convert, both for economic reasons and for personal conviction. This technology, therefore, has yet to prove itself be up to the task who is entrusting you.
