Basel. (PM EHC) EHC Basel unfortunately lost the first game in the playoff quarter-finals in “best-of-seven” mode 1:2.
The match winner was guest goalkeeper Stefan Müller, who was able to fend off 39 shots on goal. On the other hand, Visp’s 16 shots on goal were enough to score the game-winning two goals.
Very efficient Visp
The start of this playoff series was initially very tactical. Basel tried to break through the bulwark at the opposing blue line with a swirling and fast game or, when the guests closed the spaces in the Basel defense zone, to quickly bridge the neutral zone with long passes. The Valaisians, for their part, waited for their moments to switch after they won the discs. A tactical game initially developed, with Burgener putting his team in the lead with the first chance and a deflection. Seven minutes later, Haussener made it 0-2 with what was essentially his second opportunity. Despite their superiority in play, Basel failed to score in the opening half.
Twenty shots, three of which hit the edge of the goal
The Basel team came out of the locker room determined. However, Visp’s top scorer Nunn had the clearest chance in the 25th minute, failing to hit the empty goal. Practically in return, Ryser ran behind the goal on the left side and passed the disc to Bircher, who was still hanging on to Müller. However, Stukel stood there and used the rebound to score. What happened afterwards was possibly the best thing the Basel team showed so far this season. The guests practically couldn’t get out of their third. The fact that only one goal resulted from twenty shots on goal was not only due to the strong Müller, but also to bad luck at the end. Bachofner, Kummer and Supinski failed to reach the edge of the goal. The Basel team fought for one chance after the other by winning many targets in Visp’s half of the game. At times all the Valais players were in front of their goalkeeper, which made it difficult to even find a gap. Instead of being two or three goals ahead, Basel had to try to make up for the deficit in the last twenty minutes.
No luck in competition
The break was good for the guests. At least they weren’t put under as much pressure as they were in the middle section. Nevertheless, Brügger, Rouiller and Kummer had their chances to equalize. The Austrian international in Visp’s goal didn’t make things easy for the Basel team either. He stayed standing for a long time, giving the attackers no clear options, which is an effective method given his height of 182cm and 84kg. There were also few interruptions in the game, which meant that the remaining time quickly ran down. Noah Fuss still had the chance in the 57th minute in a one-on-one against Müller, but couldn’t beat him either. Two petty penalties against Basel towards the end of the game, which caused discontent on and off the ice, prevented a possible final attack by the team Basler.
Unfortunately, the good performance, especially in the middle third, was not rewarded. But the performance is encouraging. Basel has the chance to equalize the series next Friday at 7:45 p.m. in the Lonza Arena in Visp. (Report: Reto Büchler)
