Should the debt brake be relaxed? Thuringia’s Finance Minister Taubert has taken a position.

Erfurt – Thuringia’s Finance Minister Heike Taubert has spoken out against easing the debt brake. “There was a good reason to introduce the debt brake: the excessive indebtedness of public budgets,” said the SPD politician to the “Thüringer Allgemeine” (Wednesday). “The once golden rule of only borrowing for investments didn’t work because the term investment became broader and broader. So if there is now a discussion about easing the debt brake for investments, then that would be a return to the old spending patterns.”

Taubert said that the debate about easing the debt brake was pointless because she did not see a majority for a constitutional change in the Bundestag. When asked whether she would like to continue as finance minister after the state elections, the SPD politician said: “Let’s wait and see what the election brings. If I am needed, I will not shirk my responsibility.” dpa
