In northern Western Australia, a small marsupial thought to be extinct has been spotted on a wildlife camera.
A brushtail possum was caught on motion camera in an area where it had not been seen for more than 100 years, writes Newsweek.
“For people in other parts of Australia it doesn’t matter because these animals eat other people’s roses in gardens, but in this part of Australia they have long been regionally extinct. So it was a very exciting sight,” said ecologist Michelle Hall.
Conservationists are delighted to see a possum on camera as it means their efforts to reintroduce the animal have been a success.
What are brushtail possums?
Brush-tailed possums are nocturnal marsupials native to Australia and are similar in size to domestic cats. Their coloration can vary in color from silver-gray to dark brown, allowing them to easily blend into the forests and urban areas in which they live.
They are commonly found in the east and southeast of Australia, but are declining in the west and other regions.
Opossums are endangered in many areas of Australia due to habitat fragmentation and loss.
