In a medical precedent and for the first time in the world, a teenage boy was cured of the most dangerous childhood cancer that affects humans.
According to the British newspaper The Sun, Lucas, from Belgium, was only 6 years old when he was diagnosed with a brainstem glioma, a very dangerous cancer.
Children who are found to have the disease are usually given between 9 and 12 months to live after diagnosis.
Lucas was diagnosed shortly after his parents noticed he was having difficulty walking in a straight line.
His doctor, Jack Grell, remembers that he had to tell the little boy’s parents that their son would die, but the surprise came after 7 years when Lucas remained alive and the tumor completely disappeared from his brain.
“Lucas overcame all odds to survive,” Jack said.
Usually, radiotherapy in this case prolongs the patient’s life by only three months.
Jack told Agence France-Presse: “During a series of MRI scans, I saw that the tumor had completely disappeared.”
He added: “I do not know of any other case like it in the world.”
7 other children survived years after their diagnosis, but only Lucas’ tumor completely disappeared without a trace.
However, experts believe Lucas’s “miraculous” recovery could hold the key to treating other children in the future.
