The photographer tells VG about the sight he will never forget, after the Israeli attack.

Wednesday 14 February at 12:44 p.m

She is stuck in a concrete wall after the pink sweater. The body is lifeless, the leg torn off.

Blood flows down the wall.

The body of the little girl has been stuck after an Israeli air strike, says the photographer who took the picture. She is surrounded by neighbors who try to bring her down.

The picture is too graphic to be shown in its entirety in VG, but a blacked-out version is further down in this article.

1.4 million Palestinians seek refuge in Rafah in southern Gaza, after fleeing Israeli attacks further north.

Now it seems Rafah’s turn. The city is bombed with increasing intensity.

Photographer Ezzedine Muasher woke up on Monday night with a crash. One of the neighboring houses had been attacked.

He picks up his mobile phone and starts filming.

– I ran to cover it as a journalist. The house next door lay in ruins, above those who lived there. Most were children and women, Ezzedine tells VG via a messaging platform.

It was a horrible sight that met him.

– Body parts were lying on the ground, heads were separated from the bodies. I saw a mutilated girl without arms and legs.

It was then that he also saw the young girl stuck to the concrete wall.

Then he took the picture that has since gone around the world.

– She had lost both legs and was covered in blood. But that was not the only heartbreaking sight, we also saw infants who had been killed in cold blood.

VG has not succeeded in getting the girl’s identity finally confirmed, but several sources claim that her entire family was killed in the attack.

– I have to convey our voice and our suffering to the world, so that everyone can understand the atrocities and brutality that the occupation exercises, says Ezzedine.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that they had carried out a major operation to free hostages in Rafah overnight. Two Israelis were released, and the IDF itself has told VG that they bombed surrounding houses in the operation.

At least 67 Palestinians killed in the attacks, Palestinian health authorities say.

Now photographer Muasher fears what will happen.

Israel has announced that it will send ground forces into Rafah, which has been the safest place for civilians until now.

This has caused emergency aid organizations and the UN to react. The EU’s foreign affairs chief has stated that it will be an “indescribable humanitarian disaster”.

– The refugees here are in a state of shock and worry about a possible ground invasion, which means that Israel is planning to massacre civilians, as they have done in the north.

According to Palestinian health authorities, 133 Palestinians have been killed and 162 wounded in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours alone.

The number of people killed has thus risen to 28,473, and thousands of others are missing and feared to be in the ruins of bombed buildings.
